Table 2 Is Never Done. The Revision Is the Real Formatting Problem.

You format the results once for the draft, again after the committee meeting, again for Reviewer 2. The first pass is a chore. The rebuilds are where the errors get in.

Reviewer 2 asks you to control for years of experience. One sentence in a decision letter. You add the covariate and re-run the model, which takes about a minute. Then the real work starts. Every coefficient in Table 2 changes. The standard errors change. Two p-values cross a threshold, so the note under the table changes. The in-text results paragraph quotes four of those numbers, so it changes too. You retype each value by hand from the output window into the manuscript, checking italics and decimals as you go, and somewhere in that hour of retyping is where a transposed digit slips in. Not in the analysis. In the transfer.

The first time you format a table, you are learning its shape. Every time after that, you are copying numbers under deadline into a structure you already built, which is the exact condition where copy errors thrive. Studies of published psychology articles have found reported statistics that don't match their own test values at rates that should worry all of us, and most of those mismatches are not fraud or bad math. They are transfer errors. The number was right in the output and wrong in the paper.

The revision cycle is the multiplier

Count the versions an ordinary study goes through. A draft for your co-author. A version for the committee or the internal review. The submission. The revise-and-resubmit, which almost always moves numbers, because reviewers ask for a covariate, a subgroup, a different handling of missing data. Then the proofs. If your results section has five tables and the numbers move three times, you are not formatting five tables. You are formatting fifteen, and the later rounds happen at night, near a deadline, when your care is at its lowest.

The formatting rules themselves never budge. What moves is the numbers inside them. That distinction matters, because it tells you what kind of problem this is. It is not a knowledge problem. By the third rebuild you know exactly where the italic F goes. It is a synchronization problem: one analysis feeding many copies of its own results, with a human as the copy mechanism.

What the Mac changes

A synchronization problem is a computing problem, and it is one the Mac is well set up to handle. The machine can hold the analysis and the document as one connected thing instead of two files with you as the courier between them. Apple's frameworks make it practical for a native app to re-run a model and rebuild every table it produced in the same second, on your own hardware, with no server round trip. The pieces have been sitting there. Statistics software mostly hasn't used them, because most statistics software treats output as something you print, not something that stays live.

A report that regenerates

The decision letter still arrives. Reviewer 2 still wants the covariate. You send the revision back in an afternoon, and the numbers in the paper match the numbers in the analysis, every version, every time.
