Almost everyone who reads a page like this is in one of two situations. You graduated or changed institutions and the licence went with it, or you are looking at what an individual SPSS seat costs and deciding it is not defensible. This page covers what the realistic alternatives are, what you give up by leaving, and when the honest answer is to stay.
Three cases where switching is a mistake, and we would rather say them at the top than bury them.
Your syntax is the record. If your committee, co-authors or journal expect a .sps file as part of the methodological trail, no alternative on this page reproduces that exactly. Quanta has no scripting language today; jamovi and JASP have their own approaches; R replaces it with different code entirely.
You need the specialist procedures. Complex samples, custom tables, forecasting and decision trees have no direct equivalent in the lighter alternatives.
Someone else is paying. If your institution licenses SPSS and you have access, that access is worth more than any saving here. Come back when it lapses.

Install jamovi. It is free, it is native on the Mac, and for standard applied analysis it will do what you were doing in SPSS. There is no catch and no upgrade prompt. If your work is Bayesian, install JASP instead.
This is the case Quanta is built for. SPSS finishes when the pivot table appears; the reformatting, the assumption checks you meant to run, and the manual retyping into an APA table are all still ahead of you. Quanta treats those as part of the analysis, which is the difference worth $79.99 a year if you write up frequently, and not worth it if you do not.
Stata or R. Both give you a script that reruns, which is what SPSS syntax was giving you.
Be careful. Changing tools partway through a project introduces a difference you will have to explain. If you must move, run one analysis in both and confirm the numbers agree before committing.
Every option here reads .sav, so the data itself is rarely the obstacle. What does not travel is your syntax, your custom output styles, and any workflow built around SPSS-specific dialogs.
